Who we are

The Sydney Bears Ice Hockey Club are one of the founding teams in the Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL). The Bears are built around players from Sydney and nation wide, mixed with experienced imports who bring elite-level skill and leadership to the ice from the NHL, AHL, ECHL & top European leagues. Over more than two decades in the AIHL, we’ve won the Goodall Cup Championship 3 times, most recently in 2019, with consecutive playoff appearances since 2018.

The Bears season runs from April - September with the club playing 15 home games and 15 away. All home games are plated on either Saturday or Sunday with a start time of 5pm.

The AIHL

The AIHL is the flagship league for ice hockey in Australia and the biggest ice hockey league in the Southern Hemisphere.

The season runs from April to September and consists of 10 teams from around Australia. Sydney has two teams, the Sydney Bears and the Sydney Ice Dogs. Other teams in the league include Newcastle Northstars, Central Coast Rhinos, Brisbane Lightning, Adelaide Adrenaline, Perth Thunder, Canberra Brave, and two Melbourne teams, the Ice and the Mustangs. The regular season consists of 30 games, 15 home games and 15 away games. Playoffs are run over a weekend usually in late August or early September with the winner being crowned the Goodall Cup Champions.

Our fans

The Bears’ fan base is known for turning every home game into an atmosphere. Regulars, families, junior players, and first-time fans pack the rink, creating noise, energy, and momentum that players genuinely feel on the ice. From close rivalries to tight finishes, the crowd is part of the game, lifting the tempo and making Bears matches fast, loud, and worth showing up for.

Affectionately known as our Bears Family, first time hockey fans from all walks of life are immediately welcomed and fast friends with our long standing Season Pass holders. We’re proud of the culture of inclusivity we have fostered at the club.

Our volunteers

We have a considered approach to volunteering, focusing on people who want to contribute at a high standard and grow with the club. Many of our volunteers come with an interest in sport, events, media, operations, or governance; and we provide real, hands-on experience across areas to help support this.

By working closely with the club throughout the season, volunteering becomes more than just helping out on game night. For those looking to move into professional sport, both in Australia and internationally, the Bears aim to be a place where experience is earned properly and contribution is genuinely valued.
