Play in Australia

Each AIHL season, the Club hosts a select group of international import players as part of our roster.

These players typically come from competitive leagues in North America, Europe, or Asia and are expected to make an impact on the ice, contribute to team performance and contribute to the winning culture of the Bears

Our winter season offers a unique chance to play competitive hockey during the Northern Hemisphere’s off-season, stay in shape year-round and experience life in Sydney and around the country. The AIHL operates as an amateur league, and the Bears do not provide direct cash payments to players. However, we aim to support imports with practical benefits throughout their stay.

What you need to know

Import Roles and Expectations

Import spots on the Bears roster are limited each year, with a typical mix of forwards and defenders. Players without a strong playing history (for example, not reflected on Elite Prospects or equivalent competition CVs) are generally not considered for a fully sponsored import position. However, those looking to expand their international playing experience may be invited to train or attend try-outs at their own cost, with opportunities available to demonstrate capability.

To give you an idea, previous imports have come from:

  • Former NHL, AHL

  • USA ECHL, SPHL, FIHL

  • DEL, Germany 3 & 4

  • UK EIHL

  • Canada WHL

  • Japan [Asian League]

Duration and Commitment

Imports are expected to arrive in early April and remain with the team through the end of the AIHL season in late August, committing fully to the schedule and club obligations. Requests to depart early (for family or emergency reasons) must be managed independently by the player, with any extra relocation costs covered by them.

Support and Accommodation

The Bears assist import players with:

  • Accommodation arrangements close to our home rink (fully furnished with all required amenities)

  • Travel to and from Australia (flights & baggage)

  • Gym membership

  • Car requirements

  • Additional support for living expenses while in Australia

Players wanting to bring their partners are welcome, though please note we only cover accomodation expenses and travel is at your partners expense.

Equipment and Training

Imports are required to bring their own hockey gear to Australia, but the club supplies key equipment support, including helmets, gloves, jerseys, sticks, and consumables.

Interstate Road Trips

During the season the Bears travel interstate to compete against other AIHL clubs. These road trips include flights, accommodation and meals covered by the club, offering imports the chance to explore several Australian states and rinks as part of the schedule.

Training and Games

The Bears train twice per week during the season and play up to two competitive matches each weekend. This schedule gives import players regular game experience and involvement across the full AIHL calendar.

Registrations

The AIHL and Sydney Bears are fully affiliated with the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). The club facilitates and covers required player registration and transfer fees.

Work and Lifestyle in Australia

If an import player is interested in working while in Australia, the Bears can provide guidance and support based on the player’s skills and local opportunities, but securing employment remains the player’s responsibility.
